GCE Game Time

GCE Game Time

Christmas 1981. I was 10 years old.

New Zealand was a little distant from the bright lights of Hong Kong where many of the best new electronic toys were starting to slowly drift to Western markets. We certainly didn’t have any friends or family who made regular jaunts there to pick up the latest and greatest.

In the schoolyard, a particularly lucky classmate might have been blessed with a Casio game calculator, or Nintendo Game and Watch, but that was about it.

Until Christmas 1981. And my introduction to the GCE Game Time watch.

It was every 11-year-old boy’s dream — a watch with four (count ’em – FOUR!) games, three of them based on current arcade hits like Space Invaders, Missile Command and Breakout, and one unique firing squad game.

The watch was designed by a bloke called Tom Sloper (you can read all about the Game Time’s creation at his website, Sloperama) and inspired two follow-up watches – Arcade Time and Sports Time – and two calculators, Space ‘n’ Counter and Chase ‘n’ Counter.

All of them are great fun – if you can find them, and if you have a spare couple of hundred dollars for each.

Rare and excellent more than 30 years after they were made.
